I was born in Iquique, a port city located on the North Coast of Chile.
Being part of a numerous nitrate mining family, I lived my childhood and part of my youth in small mining towns in the middle of the Atacama Desert.
My interest in politics stems from my childhood, a period of intensive political and social upheaval that shook both my family and my country.
As my family belonged to the working class, we lived under very harsh economic and social conditions. In that context, President Allende’s period (1970-1973), brought hope and renewed faith in leadership. But it turned out to be short lived. Political and economic instability overshadowed the promised road to social justice.
Allende’s plan was abruptly brought to an end, and repression took the place of democracy which up to that time had been more the rule than the exception.
17 years of my life were lived under Pinochet’s regime, and it was precisely the lack of democracy that encouraged me to find out more about its virtues.
Though very young, I felt fascinated by the questions that arise from the struggles and dilemmas that human beings, despite their different backgrounds, are confronted with. I had a strong desire to broaden my own possibilities, and I considered knowledge the key to remove the most important obstacles.
Later, whilst on holiday in 1994, I met my present wife from Denmark who was travelling as a backpacker in South America. After getting married, we decided to live together in Denmark where I finally fulfilled one of my big dreams; to study politics and economics at a prestigious university.
